Time to shed the weight

Today's Scripture

"I am still not all I should be, but I am bringing all my energies to bear on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead." [Philippines 3:13]

Today's Word

Many of us have learned that excess and unnecessary weight can slow a person down. Do you know that dropping a few pounds can actually improve your overall health by lowering your blood pressure, reverse diabetes and improve stamina? Unfortunately, most of us never realize the difference until we shed the weight; it is only then that we experience a remarkable new quality of life. We weren't designed to carry excess weight, nor were we designed to carry the pains, mistakes and burdens of the past - they too will slow you down and affect the quality of your life.

If you want to live the life God intended for you it's time to be aggressive and energetic when it comes to letting go of the past and pressing forward to the abundant life God has in store for you. It's time to rise up and boldly go after your victory! It's time to develop a warrior mentality and proactively pursue happiness, health, and peace that is promised in God's Word.

God told Joshua to cross over the Jordan and go in and possess the land. Notice that word, "possess" implies action. It means to drive out the previous tenants. It's time to quit dwelling on past mistakes and failures and determine to never look back! As you set your focus like a flint towards the Word of God and His promises, you'll discover victory arising in every area of your life-you'll discover that God has much more for you and you'll begin to feel lighter, healthier and more energetic as you step into your new life. Don't let that old weight hold you down, take the necessary steps to shed a few pounds and begin to live healthier, happier and freer.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I want to live the victorious life you created and designed me to live. I know I am not perfect, but help me to focus on the future, not my past mistakes, and grant me the courage to pursue the happiness, health, and peace that you promised for me. In Jesus' name - Amen.

What season are you in?

Today's Scripture

"In due season, you shall reap if you faint not." (Galatians 6:9)

Today's Word

God has a due season in store for you! The Bible doesn't say you might reap, it says "you shall reap"-if you don't give up. In order to reach your due season or harvest of blessing, you must continue to believe God's Word and confess His promises daily.

You are the only one who knows what God has placed in your heart, and the evidence of that is what comes out of your mouth. It's as if you are in a courtroom and the enemy is your accuser but the Holy Spirit is your Advocate. Your testimony will prove that you are standing strong on God's Word!

A Prayer for Today

God, this is the time for me to stand strong in my faith. Whatever the circumstance, I will confess your power and mercy all the days of my life. You have a plan for me. Give me the patience to wait with a cheerful heart for my "season of blessing." In Jesus' name - Amen.

Sent to Save

Today's Scripture

"This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn't go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted; anyone who refuses to trust him has long since been under the death sentence without knowing it. And why? Because of that person's failure to believe in the one-of-a-kind Son of God when introduced to him." [John 3:16-18 - The Message]

Today's Word

One day many years ago something happened in my life that would change me and the world around me forever. I found myself in the battle of a life time. As a teenager, I had survived two tours in Viet-Nam, but I thought losing my wife, my job and all of my friends was more than I could ever bear. I felt alone, used, abandoned, lost, without hope and frankly there were times I felt like giving up. That was until one day when my seven year old daughter Lisa [now 35] walked into the room in which I was sitting and told me, "Daddy, God loves you and he needs you very much, and so do I!" That day I cried my eyes out and realized just how selfish I really was and I didn't even know it. If someone else would have told me what I had just heard, I do not think I would have ever listened. That day my life took on a profound change and now thousands across the globe have received the message of Hope all because God had put his Words in a little girls' mouth. She was sent to save.

You are one-of-a-kind. There is no one else on the earth just like you. You have been [created] saved-to-serve. That's right. God created you, just like his own Son, to bring his message of direction, hope and promise to this messed-up and very confused world. Even your address is not an accident, you are where you are for a reason, to bring God's message to your own kitchen table - your family. It begins right where you live. Set aside some "quiet" time and learn the message of Christ [not religion] by spending a little time each day in the Word of God. Then, in your own unique way teach that message, just like Jesus did, to your loved ones. You taught them to walk, talk, catch a ball, swim, read and eat, so why not teach them something they are going to need long after you are gone - it will change their life forever, maybe for eternity.

Remember: You have been given a Gift to share not throw away into the air, it may just save someone's life.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, Your Words are like a lamplight for my feet. Lead me, guard me and guide me as I draw closer to You each day. In Jesus name. Amen.

Dare To Live

Today's Scripture

"Teach us to number our days and recognize how few they are; help us to spend them as we should." [Psalm 90:12 -TLB]

Today's Word

Have you ever wanted to do something you just never took the time to do? Swim with the dolphins, climb Everest, take up sculpting, take a tour of the world, write a book, go back to school, begin a new career, run a marathon, start a soup kitchen, work with the poor, read the Bible, open a business, etc.? Well, what are you waiting for? Now is the time to do it!

How many summers do you have left? How many days will pass that you could have used to live your dream?

God created you with a dream inside of you. He created you with tremendous gifts, talents and uniqueness, and by waiting for "someday" you're wasting today. Make this time of your life count. You can't bless others until you begin blessing yourself. As you discover, develop and put into action the gift and dream inside of you, you will begin to bring God's gift in you to the world. Go for it - Now is the time!

A Prayer for Today

Lord, Show me Your ways, unleash in me Your dream, and paint Your story of glorious hope to the whole world through me, a mere brush in Your hand. Each day You have given me is a gift, teach me through Your Word to use it well. In Jesus name. Amen.

What Matters Most

Today's Scripture

"In this new life one's nationality or race or education or social position is unimportant; such things mean nothing. Whether a person has Christ is what matters, and he is equally available to all." [Colossians 3:11 - TLB]

Today's Word

Someone recently asked me a very difficult question to which there was a very simple answer. "Why do I always want more?" I responded, "Because you have never discovered what really matters most."

A Prayer for Today

Lord, thank you for Christ, for without him, surely I would be lost, wondering, hopeless and afraid. He is my strength, my Rock, my hope and my salvation. It is in him that I see You. I Jesus name. Amen.

Learn To Master Life

Today's Scripture

"Then God said, "Let us make a man-- someone like ourselves, to be the master of all life upon the earth and in the skies and in the seas." So God made man like his Maker. Like God did God make man; Man and maid did he make them." [Genesis 1:26-27 -TLB]

Today's Word

You were created for more. The Word of God says you have been given authority over all the earth, not to be its slave, but to be its master. Many times we find ourselves working for "things" the "bling" rather than living our intended purpose. We work to support a big house, drive a fancy car, pay for timeshares and own five "big screen" plasma televisions that deliver stress, bad news, teach competitiveness, promote violence and pervert the beauty of sexuality all in one house. We pay for gaudy jewelry, boats, memberships and "designer" cloths seeking happiness and wonder why we get so tired and need to work even harder to take a "long-deserved" vacation. Then, one day after the kids are grown and you've worked yourself into "old-age" you say, "I think we'll get a little house on the lake and just take life easy now."

While serving in the mission field one year working with the Mayan Indians I noticed that they amazingly experienced no hypertension, coronary artery disease, diabetes, strokes or cancer. They lived to be very old and never experienced divorce, troubled children, rebellion or stress, they seemed always very happy and full of life. For prophylaxis [treatment to prevent disease] they would chew the white portion between the peal and the fruit of an orange. But what struck me the most was that the Mayans would start out in the little house on the lake and stay throughout their lives in the little house on the lake. All of their time was virtually spent with "the family", playing, laughing, singing and telling stories of olden times, especially stories they had heard of the Savior. They would work the ground to eat, not to purchase "things" that really do not matter. What I found that matter most to the Mayans was that they mastered life, life did not master them.

Learn to work smarter not harder. That was God's intention when he made you the master and not the slave of life.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, teach me how to live my life with real purpose, for I know then, my years will bring glory to your name. In Jesus name. Amen.

Don't Worry ~ Be Happy!

Today's Scripture

"Who of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?" (Matthew 6:27)

Today's Word

Worrying gives the devil the opportunity to move, just like worship gives God the opportunity to move. Worrying means to play the enemy's lies in your mind, over and over again. God promises in Isaiah 26:3 that He will keep us in perfect peace when we keep our minds stayed on Him. So when the opportunity to worry comes, use it as a reminder to worship the Lord and thank Him for His good and precious promises! Cast all of your cares on the Lord, because He cares for you! And when people try and sow seeds of "gloom and doom", regardless of their intentions, disconnect that "gloom and doom" line and pick up a line of "encouragement" from the Word (The Bible).

A Prayer for Today

God, I am weary from worrying. Please help me to stop the soundtrack of needless worry that plays over and over again in my head. I want to place my fears and concerns in Your hands and live in peace knowing that You will fulfill all of your precious promises to me. In Jesus' name - Amen.

SUCCESS

Today's Scripture

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart form your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” [Joshua 1:8 – NIV]

Today's Word

Many people think that prosperity and success come from having power, influential personal contacts, education, money, and a relentless desire to get ahead.

Some years ago I was invited to a “Texas Bean Luncheon” outside of Houston. The event was held on the estate of a very “successful” businessman in the world’s eyes. He was the Chairman of one of the largest companies in the world. This individual served on the Board of Trustees of Baylor University and actually hired the world renowned cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Michael DeBakey. While standing on a balcony of his mansion, which overlooked thousands of acres, my friend pointed out and said to me, “Do you see all of that land? Every inch of it belongs to me!” Still looking out he pointed to at least fifty oil wells and said, “Marty, do you see all of those rigs? I own every last one of them as far as you can see!” Then, he pointed out hundreds of heads of cattle that was grazing amidst the land and said, “Every one of those cattle belongs to me!” “Yes sir” he said, “I’m set for life!” I looked into my friends eyes and asked him a very simple question as I pointed my finger towards heaven. “Friend, how much of that do you own?” He lowered his head and became silent. Some years later my friend received Jesus Christ as his personal Savior, his son became a minister and together they went on to build churches, missions and Bible schools all over the world. Not long ago I received a letter from my friend, in it he wrote these words, “Marty, now my life has purpose.”

So friend, how much of heaven do you own?

A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me to focus on what really matters most, my relationship with You. For without it - I’m bankrupt. In Jesus name. Amen.

CONTROL

Today's Scripture

“For the Holy Spirit, God's gift, does not want you to be afraid of people, but to be wise and strong, and to love them and enjoy being with them.” [2 Timothy – TLB]

Today's Word

Control can be an issue of several unattractive components; generally the issue or “spirit of control” is derived or “rooted” from an element of fear. For example, when someone is controlled by pride they themselves will generally have a need to control others. When a person is living a lifestyle which they intuitively know is wrong and unacceptable to God, in many cases they too will display elements of control or anger, even rage at times, in order to try and compensate for their own behavior. A person who has been wounded and experienced pain from the past may often try to unconsciously protect themselves by displaying an attitude of control, this is usually a defense mechanism, again an element rooted in fear.

Don’t let fear control you. The Word of God says, “God did not give us a spirit of fear, but a spirit of love and of sound mind.” So the next time you feel as though you’re being controlled or even controlling, stop for a moment and ask yourself, “What am I (or they) afraid of?” Then, let it go and use the Spirit God gave you – The Spirit of His love and a sound mind to promote unity which is rooted in the fruit of His Spirit [Galatians 5:22] .

A Prayer for Today

Lord, refresh me with Your Word, bathe me with Your Spirit, and wash me with Your love that I may flee all fear. Help me to remember You are my Shepherd, whom shall I fear? In Jesus name. Amen.

God's Representative

Today's Scripture

"The Spirit of the Lord is upon me; he has appointed me to preach Good News to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted and to announce that captives shall be released and the blind shall see, that the downtrodden shall be freed from their oppressors, and that God is ready to give blessings to all who come to him." [Luke 4:18 - TLB]

Today's Word

You are God’s Representative on earth. That was his intention in sending you here. When the Head-of-State sends an envoy on a mission he sends them with a message that represents his character and intention. You have been chosen to represent more than yourself, you are here to bring God’s message of Hope and Promise for everyone He created.

Include God’s message of Hope and Promise in every area of your life. If you’re an athlete, reflect His character in your game, if you’re a business man or woman, reflect His character in your practices, if you’re a medical professional, reflect His character in the way you treat people, and if you’re married or a parent, reflect His character in the way treat your spouse and in the way you raise your children. In whatever position you find yourself, reflect God’s character – that’s what you’re here for, that’s your mission, that’s your purpose – A Representative, not of the people, but of God who made the people.

Remember: The people you touch with your life will carry the message you bring long after you have left. Think about it. Why are you here?

A Prayer for Today

Lord, what a privilege I have been given to represent You here on earth. There is no greater calling or meaning. Each day brings new opportunities to administer your Hope, Promise and Love to everyone I meet. Help me to help others to know You through the mission You have sent me on. In Jesus name. Amen.

You're closer than you think

Today's Scripture

“And when you draw close to God, God will draw close to you.” [James 4:8]

Today's Word

Several years ago I found myself feeling challenged and I wanted to give up where we had planted our church. People just would not come. I questioned my anointing, my education, my ability as a pastor and so many other areas of my life. Frankly, at moments I felt like a looser. Little did I know that is exactly what Satan wanted me to feel, he wanted me to give-up, and he wanted me to stop reaching my community with the Hope and Promise of God. I never told anyone, I just prayed for direction day in and day out and the answer just didn’t seem to come.

One day a friend invited me to play golf, needing a day off I accepted his invitation. As the afternoon went on and we drew nearer to the eighteenth hole I was up to hit the ball. As I took my stance ready to swing my friend said, “Marty, you’re closer than you think!” Immediately, I abandoned my swing and turned to him as though I had heard a voice from heaven and I responded, “David, what did you just say?” “You’re closer than you think” he said again, and I knew God had just answered my prayer, “I have a plan for you!”

Today, we are reaching and encouraging over a half-million people every Wednesday evening with the Hope and Promise of God through our TV Ministry and the territory continues to expand. Each weekday morning over 1500 subscribers across the globe receive our daily inspiration called TODAY and that ministry also continues to grow as readers share God’s Word with friends and family.

You may feel at times that God is distant and does not hear your prayers. You may be experiencing moments where you feel alone, confused and like giving up. When that happens go to God’s Word, read His promise for your life, draw close to Him with prayer and meditation, not asking for “things” but rather for “direction” and you can count on it, as you draw closer to God, God will draw closer to you and He will lead you according to His plan. Don’t listen to negative words from anyone. Don’t listen to small-minded thinkers and don’t seek the advice from ungodly folk, they’ll wear you down. Seek God and open your eyes, your ears and most importantly, open your heart.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, those moments when You seemed so distant, I realize You didn’t move, it was me that moved from You. Today, I am making every effort to spend more time in Your Word and less time complaining, worrying and doubting. Thank you for always being so loving a patient with me. In Jesus name. Amen.

Grow by letting go!

Today's Scripture

"No one's ever seen or heard anything like this, never so much as imagined anything quite like it—what God has arranged for those who love him." (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Today's Word

When Christ asks you to die to yourself, He is asking you to allow Him to re-create you into something new and wonderful. It's like the outer shell that covers a seed. As long as that shell is in place, the seed will never grow. The shell has to die for that seed to produce a harvest. Your outer shell has to die for you to be fruitful. Once we give up what we want and begin living for Christ, we will begin to experience the peace, joy, and happiness that God has in store for us. Friend, you will never know what real living is until you let go of your outer shell! True happiness and true fulfillment come when we give our lives away, because when we do that God is prepared to flood your heart with His goodness.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, I know that true happiness and fulfillment come when I relinquish control of my life to you. Give me strength to do just that today. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Paid in Full

Today's Scripture

“I've blotted out your sins; they are gone like morning mist at noon! Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free." [Isaiah 44:22 - TLB]

Today's Word

Some years ago I invited my family to dinner as we celebrated my birthday at one of the most expensive restaurants in all of New York City, The Plaza Hotel. Everything went so great that night. We ate incredibly well, enjoyed some of the best food in the world, wonderful desserts and entertainment that was priceless. At the end of the evening I asked the maître d’ for the check and to my surprise he told me the bill had been paid. I was shocked and asked, “Who paid the bill?” He bent down to my ear and whispered, “Your father paid for everything.”

You have been given the free-gift of life which is beyond explanation. You have been given power over sin and even death. Your Father has given you the authority to multiply, to create, to live, to discover and to heal. You have been given all that your Father owns because of his unmatched love for you. But most important you have been given an invitation from your Father to walk with him forever. That wasn’t always possible, because of ancestral defiance to God and because of your own unintentional blemishes. Although sometimes you may not understand it all, the fact is, God’s Word say’s someone had to pay for everything which no man could afford. So, God sent his Son, Jesus Christ to Calvary to pay the bill so that you can live forever in God’s Kingdom.

Have a “Good Friday” the bill has been paid by your Father.

A Prayer for Today

Father, today I step out in faith and trust that your Word is truth, and while I may not understand it all, I accept that Jesus is the Savior of the world, that he alone paid for my sins and I have been forgiven through your grace and mercy and received the free gift of eternal-life. In Jesus name. Amen.

Dare To Dream Big

Today's Scripture

"After I have poured out my rains again, I will pour out my Spirit upon all of you! Your sons and daughters will prophesy; your old men will dream dreams, and your young men see visions.” [Joel 2:28]

Today's Word

You may have a dream deep within that is waiting to be unleashed. Maybe you want to open a coffee shop, take a trip around the world, take up ballroom dancing or learn to sculpture or play the piano. Maybe you want to go back to school or get radical and explore the depths of the ocean. Whatever your dream is now is the time to “Dream Big” and then go for it. Nothing can stop you except you. God has placed incredible dreams within you and he created you to live those dreams, so if you want to run a marathon, start taking your first steps, fly in a hot-air balloon, go for it and enjoy the life God has made just for you to live. Whatever your dream, dare to dream big, and then explore the entire splendor of His workmanship, its awesome!

The Gift

Today's Scripture

“And God has reserved for his children the priceless gift of eternal life; it is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” [1 Peter 1:4]

Today's Word

Imagine, giving a one-of-a-kind gift to someone you love so very much, a gift which is priceless, like none other in the entire world, and the person you give it to pushes the gift away with little or no interest? Surely, such a gesture would disappoint any giver.

You have been given an incredible gift, like none other in the world. You have been gifted with talents of extraordinary proportions. You may have the talent of music, compassion, encouragement, giving, mercy, teaching, cooking, coaching, building, art, design, sports, healing, drama, etc... Whatever gift or talent you have has been given to you by God and is priceless. Your gift was purchased at an incredible price which no one else on earth could have ever afforded. Your gift is unique, made just for you to share with the world. This gift was given to you because of God’s unmatched love for you and those he wants you to share it with.

Don’t ever take your gift for granted, use it each and every day. Give God thanks by using it as it was intended. Bless others with your gift. And remember, the greatest gift of all is the gift of eternal-life; this gift was paid for with the blood of Jesus Christ over 2007 years ago, it is the gift that keeps on giving and it was given just for you.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, show me how to use the gift you have blessed me with. Help me to develop the habit of sharing my gift and bringing joy to the lives of others and help me to accept your free gift of eternal-life. In Jesus Name. Amen.

You Have God's Favor

Today's Scripture

“You provide delicious food for me in the presence of my enemies. You have welcomed me as your guest; blessings overflow! Your goodness and unfailing kindness shall be with me all of my life, and afterwards I will live with you forever in your home.” [Psalm 23:5-6 - TLB]

Today's Word

Do you know where God leads he provides? That’s right. If you are where God has placed you at this moment in your life, stop worrying, because he will never fail you. God wants you to succeed in all you do, but keep in mind, there's a caveat. You must believe God’s promise. In John 16:9 Jesus is remembered as saying, “The world’s sin is unbelief in me.” When we doubt God we are really saying, “God, you’re unable to take care of my needs.” It’s at that point we [unknowingly] begin to breakdown and accept the lie from the enemy, whose sole purpose is to see you separated from Gods plan. Don’t buy his subtle lies; he is trying to steal your blessing of joy and hope. When you are living according to God’s plain, you can expect his favor and victory over every area of your life. Spiritual, physical and psychological needs will be met as God deems. You don’t have to worry, because God already has provisions [blessings] stored up for you. As you believe you will begin to receive all that you need to fulfill your life mission. As a baby is totally dependent on its parent for care, give all your cares to your Provider [God] and trust that he will take you to the next phase of your journey. Remember: You’re here because God wants you here for his purpose. It’s not about your agenda; it’s about his purpose being fulfilled through your life. God is on your side and you’re his VIP so believe he has a plan for your life, and then let him fulfill it through you.

A Prayer for Today

Lord, help me through the power of your own [Holy] Spirit to trust your will in all the details of my life.
